As many as 675 station ticket offices are under threat of closure, with staff being replaced by ticket vending machines (TVM) that will cause problems for local communities who rely on that service. If your station is on the list and you agree with our reasons to defend it, reasons based on community experience elsewhere, why not take action to defend it. And tell us what you plan and how we can help.
Rally for your Railways
Together for Transport has announced a Rally for your Railways to take place in Bristol on 19 January.
Britain’s railways are at a watershed with record numbers of passengers travelling by train and announcements of electrification and new trains for the Great Western route.
Yet, at the same time the government and industry are seeking to make radical changes across the railways to cut government support by over £1 billion at a time of passengers having to fork out for above inflation fare increases.
The railways have always been a hot potato with everyone having an opinion. Today it is the fares but many still remember the Beeching Cuts in the 1960s that decimated the suburban railway around Bristol.
Combined with the local effect of national government policies, local campaigners in the Bristol area are calling for the reinstatement of crucial railway lines like the one to Portishead.
Our Panel is made up of senior local representatives from the railway industry, campaigners and trade unions but what we really want to hear are your views.
Together for Transport are asking what sort of railway do you want around the greater Bristol area?
Why not come and join us as follows:
Between 7 and 9pm
On Thursday 19th January
At Committee Room 15, The Council House, College Green, Bristol
Speakers include:
Bill Monteith – TSSA
Bernard Kennedy – ASLEF
